Brain Waves (EEG) and Function

Since most of you here today are scientists in the making, I’d like to talk about religion in relation to science. Science, of course, must be verifiable. A phenomenon must be verified analytically based on scientific data.
Today’s lecture is entitled “how do mental illusions occur,” and I am going to discuss the results we have obtained from experiments using an electroencephalograph.
Brain waves represented by an EEG, can be classified as follows according to their frequencies: gamma waves, beta waves, medium-fast waves, alpha waves, delta waves and waves that are not related to any of these. The frequency becomes less in this order. Gamma waves have a frequency over 30 hertz. Beta waves are between 18 and 29 hertz, medium-fast waves are 14- 18 hertz, alpha waves are 8 – 14 hertz, and delta waves are between 4 and 0.5 hertz.
As for their functions, gamma waves are the coarsest type of brain wave. For instance, they are generated when we are angry or excited. Beta waves are waves generated in normal, daily- life activities, in other words, when we are controlled by afflictive desires. Medium-fast are generated when there is little thinking activity. Alpha waves appear when are awake but the mind is calm. During sleep, delta waves are recorded.
I began today’s lecture with the talk on brain waves because I wanted to tell you that in order to attain a really peaceful state of mind, you must replace gamma waves with delta waves, and eventually make them flat. My brain waves have a frequency below 0.05hertz. When I am talking as I am now, they become a little faster and are replaced by delta waves but in a normal wakeful condition, they are below0.05hertz. Doctors say that this is the state of brain death, the state of a vegetable. In other words, I am leading a regular life in a state deeper than that is normally considered deep sleep. In December or January’s “Investigation into the Truth” ( AUM TV program in Russia ), you will be able to see my EEG on TV.

The Path to Becoming a God

There are two religious paths. One is the path of peace and the other is the path to become a god or unite with gods. First I will talk about the path to becoming a god. In terms of brain waves, this path is related to theta waves, slow waves from 8 to 4 hertz. Very similar slow waves are generated when we are experiencing sexual ecstasy. The form of these waves, however, is different. In the case of sexual ecstasy, a wave called a “spike” appears but when we are in union with gods, slow and flat waves appear. The difference in the two types of waves shows that the intensity of the feeling is the same, but the type of feeling which is experienced is different. Sexual union brings a simulative kind of joy while the union with gods, or the visualization of gods brings a gentler kind of joy. This is the difference between sexual ecstasy and the blissful state experienced when we are in union with gods.

The Path of Peace

The other path is related to looking at things as they are. This must be what the students of this university are essentially interested in. This is the second path called the path of peace.
When we look at things, we think that we are looking at them with our five senses. But these senses are the very things that prevent us from looking at things correctly. A good example is the sense of taste. Even if the object, the food we eat in case, is the same, some of us may say. “It is delicious,“ while others may say, ”It is awful.” In short, what makes us unable to look at things correctly, what deceives us with many illusions, is the very functioning of our brain.
In Buddhist and Yogic texts, the state in which the functioning of the brain stops is described as “the cessation of deliberation and examination,” or, “the state in which deliberation and examination no longer exist.” This is when we are not thinking at all, a state in which brain activity completely stops. Not a single image appears before the mind.
This state corresponds to the second, third and fourth of the four great stages of realization in Buddhism. The difference in each of these three stages depends on whether the mental activity in that particular stage is restful or blissful or if it is neither restful nor painful.
You are living in illusions. I can say so because you are not yet aware that what I am discussing in today’s lecture is one of the most important aspects of your mental faculties. Let me take an example of airplanes in America and Russia. Russia has an excellent fighter called the MIG-31. America’s equivalent is the F-15 of F-16. In order to determine which fighter is has better or has better performance, we must test them under the condition. It is the same with religion. The efficiency of religious practice may be attested by one’s subjective observation. But the religion we need in the 21stcentury, and, of course, at end of 20th century, must have the means to verify the process of evolution with the latest scientific technology, and eventually show the way to attain the state of immortality described in Buddhist and Yogic texts. This is the state which transcends death completely.
In short, using the latest scientific technology, we are able to verify, to some extent, how human beings evolve, how human beings transform themselves into new beings. This is what I wanted to tell you in today’s lecture.

Why Spiritually Evolved people Can Read Others’Minds

I told you earlier that my EEG is below 0.05 hertz. There are however, differences between my EEG and those of patients who are brain dead. One difference is that my EEG also records an ECG (electrocardiogram), the waves generated by the heart. The other and essential difference concerns the ability called “Divine Mind Reading” in Buddhist texts. This is an ability to read others’ minds. My EEG reflects the EEG of any person who is near me. In a shielded room, my EEG stays at 0.05 hertz but, as soon as somebody comes near and I synchronize my mind to his or hers, that person’s EEG is reflected in my EEG as it is .This is nothing but a scientific verification of what is described in Buddhist texts, why spiritually evolved people can read others minds.

Singing and Analytical Thinking

This examination shows us clearly what we should do in order to attain a certain result. Of course, there are many ways of living in this world. You may say, “I like this way of live. I am happy the way I am.” This is one choice, and it is called clinging. Another way is a path called analytical thinking. In this path, you think about what is the best life for you and have a good understanding of its fundamental condition. By analyzing each condition thoroughly you master that condition yourself. One by one you master them all, and eventually achieve the life or the life or the state of consciousness you aim, for. This latter path will be required for creating a new human species which will produce leaders in the 21st century. And finally, when there is no more taking in and releasing of data/information from our physical body, we will know everyting. We will become omniscient.

Questions and Answers

Q: How can I go into a trance?
A: The trance state can be considered a process for generating theta waves, and there are two ways to go into this state. One is repetition. For example, you think of a god and repeat a Mantra, which are words of gods. This is called the path of concentration. The other way is known in Buddhism as “deliberation and examination.” This is the replacement of beta and gamma waves with alpha and theta waves by continuously taking in anti-data which stop our surface consciousness. This is called the path of contemplation.
Q: Is it possible for a human being to live on at the frequency of 0.05 hertz?
A: Whether our physical body can live eternally should be left to another experiment. But I am positive that such a person can live longer than any ordinary person.According to Buddhist text, this is the state in which one is able to freely renounce one’s body at will. It is the state in which one is able to choose between life and death perfectly at will.
